Good Going Stranger
Canadian theatre critic Richard Ouzounian from the Toronto Star examins up coming musical projects including the “Susan Musical“:
Desperately Seeking Susan was a wildly quirky 1985 movie that reminded many critics of a French New Wave film given a rock sensibility. It revealed Madonna‘s gift for comedy and gave Rosanna Arquette the best role of her career.
It also had a killer soundtrack, with everyone from Madonna and Iggy Pop through Carly Simon and Aretha Franklin strutting their stuff.
So what is the stage version going to do? It’s using the best-known songs from the Blondie catalogue, including a new song from Deborah Harry. Very strange. Blondie had nothing to do with the original film. Why not Madonna‘s greatest hits?
At any rate, Desperately Seeking Susan, the musical, opens in London’s West End this fall and we shall wait to see what happens, eagerly, if not quite desperately.
