Hennes & Mauritz, Europe's second-largest clothing retailer, said yesterday its profit rose 31 per cent in the second quarter as the company opened new stores and the Madonna-branded collection was well-received by customers.
H&M, which operates nine stores in the Toronto area, also announced a collaboration with Italian designer Roberto Cavalli.
Net income for the three months through May 31 rose to 3.47 billion Swedish kronor, or $540 million (Canadian), from 2.65 billion kronor a year earlier, H&M said. Sales gained 18 per cent to 20.05 billion kronor. Net income for the first six months rose to 5.1 billion kronor.
"The spring collections have been well received by the customers during the whole first half-year," the company said.
Shares in H&M, which has a total of 1,420 stores worldwide, dipped 1.54 per cent to 416 kronor yesterday in Stockholm, however.

 | HM April sales rise on Madonna range and warmer weather |
|
|
Hennes & Mauritz AB, Europe's second- largest clothes retailer, said sales rose 8 percent in April as warmer weather and a line designed with Madonna drew shoppers, Bloomberg reports.
"The figures are quite good,'' said Luca Solca, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein in London. "We expected the positive impact from warm April weather and the Madonna collection.'' Solca rates the shares "market perform.''
Maintaining the momentum from the Madonna line, which fueled sales growth for two months running, may be a challenge for the company, said Solca. Future months may see "quite a lot of volatility, depending on'' future clothes collections, he said.

Actress Lauren Graham from the Gilmore Girls series was yesterday on the Ellen show. She was talking about being at a spa and as soon as the time was over she and her friends had to run to some mall to H&M to check out the new Madonna line.
She made a great deal of it, saying if Madonna takes the time to personally hand sew these dresses then -- hey! -- she was there for her.
Ellen said: is that one of the dresses? And she said "yes and isn't it great".
So cute and funny. And great Madonna promotion!

 | Fashion: HM sales surge as Madonna collection launched |
|
|
There have been some reports from the press - not many, to tell the truth - hinting that the M by Madonna collection did not match the Swedish retailer's expectations and failed to sell well. Today we can finally have numbers speaking for themselves as Hennes & Mauritz pubished the group sales development for Mach, the month the collection designed by Madonna went on sale.
In the month of March 2007, sales in local currencies including VAT increased by
29% compared to March previous year.
Analysts had expected a warm and early spring, easy year-earlier comparisons and sales of clothes designed by Madonna to boost March figures! - Reuters comments.
"The H&M results easily topped the 20% rise expected on average by analysts and the 10% rise seen in sales for comparable stores. "Fantastic figures," said one analyst. "They were above all expectations and will be a fillip for the stock market today."
Another analyst said the figures could boost the sector. "It has been a good month, a little bit better than expected. I think there will be a positive reaction on the market, and also for the sector," the analyst said.
The firm had 1,386 stores open at the end of March, up from 1,216 a year earlier.
From Hennes & Mauritz and Reuters.
Hennes & Mauritz AB, Europe's second-largest clothes retailer, said sales in March rose at the fastest pace in at least 15 months, beating analysts' estimates, as designs by Madonna lured shoppers in London and Berlin.
The stock rose to a record. Revenue from stores open at least a year gained 17 percent, the Stockholm-based company said today in a statement. The median estimate of 16 analysts polled by SME Direkt was for growth of 9.5 percent. Total sales surged 29 percent in the month.
''It's the stock in the industry to own, and celebrity collections by the likes of Madonna are generating lots of buzz for the company,'' said Simon Blecher, a fund manager who manages the equivalent of $590 million at HQ Fonder AB in Stockholm, including H&M stock. '' There's enormous momentum in the shares.''
The shares rose as much as 13.5 kronor, or 3.1 percent, to 443.5 kronor and traded at 438 kronor as of 12:58 p.m. in Stockholm. The stock is up 56 percent in a year, while shares of larger rival Inditex SA are up 51 percent in the period.
'' The Madonna collection was clearly significant,'' said Henrik Schultz, an analyst at Danske Equities in Copenhagen, who advises shareholders buy the retailer's shares.
From Bloomberg.
A
one-off clothing range launched by Madonna ensured fashion chain H&M posted bumper monthly sales figures today
Sweden's Hennes & Mauritz said like-for-like sales soared by 17% during March, while new stores added to the firm's overall performance with total sales up by 29%.
The clothing range by Madonna, which was released on March 22, helped contribute to the rise, while the warmer weather also brought forward sales of the firm's spring and summer collections.
Analysts at Citigroup said the like-for-like rise was ahead of estimates of around 9%, helped by a wider inclusion of the pop superstar's M collection, which included a cropped black leather jacket at £99.99 and white shirts at £14.99.
H&M said: "The M by Madonna collection was present in all 1,300 stores and drove impressive revenue growth in the first 10 days after the launch. Notably the previous designer collections were typically only in 250 stores."

M-Tribe contributor Laurent sent in an interesting H&M related news he came across in a short article in the movie section of French weekly magazine Télérama.
In a nutshell, the article, titled "b>Madonna dress up as a cinephile", explains how the H&M commercial Madonna directed not only refers to recent movies such as The Devil Wears Prada, but is also inspired to a great movie from the 50's, "Funny Face", while the collection itself is reminiscent of film noir.
"Funny Face" is a 1957 movie directed by Stanley Donen and starring Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire.
The online website for Télérama features a great clip from the movie from which you can clearly see how it inspired the H&M commercial. The article is wrapped up by saying that Madonna has understood her
unrequited love for cinema has to be turn into something, anything.

Special thanks to Laurent for this interesting report.

From CNBC:
Swedish fashion retailer Hennes & Mauritz posted a healthy first-quarter profit, but it’s the company’s second-quarter results that may be very interesting and - the company hopes - rewarding.
In March, H&M opened its first Collections of Style store, a new chain that will sell clothes at a higher price range. The first store is located on the fashionable and upscale Regent Street in Central London. Stores are scheduled to open soon in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.
March also brought the well-publicized launch of a collection co-designed by pop star Madonna, a move the company hopes will further boost sales during the second quarter. The M By Madonna collection hit stores March 22. Initial reaction was disappointing.
The Swedish retailer, a leader affordable fashion - was one of the first to combine celebrity collections with budget prices. Their much-anticipated clothing line, "M by Madonna" went on sale March 22nd. It is the second collection by Madonna for H&M. The 30-piece line was co-designed by Madonna and the Swedish retailer’s Director of Design, Margereta Van den Bosh, and includes a white trench coat, printed blouses and sequined shift dresses. Prices range from $30 to $580. In many locations, the clothes went flying off the racks in less than an hour. H&M said the "M by Madonna" collection reflects Madonna’s "timeless, unique and always glamorous style."
Madonna is not the only celebrity to promote H&M clothes. Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue - a tad closer in age to the company’s core customer - was recently hired to model swimwear.
H&M has also called upon some of fashion’s biggest names to design collections with hot selling lines by Stella McCartney, Karl Lagerfeld and cult label Viktor & Rolf.
H&M has been expanding rapidly and the company plans to continue do so. In the second quarter alone, 75 new stores are slated for opening - a good number of them in the U.S. The company’s first store in Hong Kong opened earlier this month and sales have reportedly exceeded expectations. H&M has more than 1,300 stores in 28 countries, Indeed, the company said expansion helped boost sales in the first quarter as net profit rose 27%.

As the doors of H&M's flagship store opened on Thursday morning and let the strains of Madonna's hit Lucky Star spill out onto the London pavement, hundreds of eager shoppers jostled to get their hands on designs by the veteran style icon.
There were scenes of chaos as the women - many of whom had braved snow showers and freezing temperatures to queue up outside at 6am - snapped up dresses, coats and bags bearing the M by Madonna label. Rubbing shoulders with them was a sprinkling of men - under strict instructions from working girlfriends to pick up items spotted on the internet.
The new range - which is inspired by the mum-of-three's own wardrobe and includes a silk kimono-style dress for £39.99 and oversized sunglasses at £19.99 - received mixed reviews from the fashion set however. While that didn't seem to deter the Ray Of Light singer's fans, sales calmed after the initial rush with the collection failing to sell out as Stella McCartney's H&M line did last November.
H&M was keen to emphasise this wasn't down to lack of demand, however, but to the huge numbers of clothes available. "With designer collections like Stella's we picked big city stores. But with this, because it is so wearable, we put it everywhere."
From Hello! Magazine.
