Madonna directed Miu Miu's film
MadonnaMadonna is the secret director of Miu Miu's a/w 2010 campaign film, Elle UK reports.

The campaign film for Miu Miu's autumn/winter 2010 collection has been doing the rounds for a couple of months now and we fell for it as soon as we saw it. It stars models Lindsey Wixson, Siri Tollerød, Ginta Lapina, and Daphne Groeneveld, all decked out in the lust-have embellished dresses that have caused such a stir paired with kitten heels, patent bags and matching eye shadow.

The girls laugh, play and throw shapes to some bass-heavy dance music backed by strobe lights. And it's just emerged where they got their moves from - Madonna was on set giving them tips.

Apparently Madonna rocked up onto the set of the Miu Miu campaign shoot to meet photographers Mert Atlas and Marcus Pigott and take them for dinner. But she got distracted and ended up directing the video instead.

Ginta Lapina told Love magazine, 'We were supposed to shoot a video, so Madonna said she wanted to direct it. They said she could do it but they weren't going to pay her and she started laughing. She put on her iPod and taught us moves and we shot the video for two hours.'

Take a look at the resulting film below and see how many signature Madonna moves you can spot:

Vintage Madonna: Blond Ambition in Nice - August 5 1990
MadonnaToday, 20 years ago, Madonna's Blond Ambition Tour ended with a spectacular and sold out concert in Nice, France. The show was recorded by Pioneer who had an exclusive deal with Madonna to use to bust sales of the then new semi digital format: the laserdisc.

This concert was given exclusively Pioneer and due to this it was never officially released on ANY other format different from Laserdisc.

As a memorabilia of that tour here's a look at that collectable laserdisc, issued both in Pal and NTSC formats for Europe and US respectively. The big silver disc was housed in the fold out cover shown below. Click on images to enlarge.

In The Press: Smoke on the water
MadonnaMadonna's spokesperson has rebuked speculation the Material Girl has started smoking again after she was snapped holding a cigarette - insisting it was just a prop for her new movie project.

The pop superstar has stepped behind the camera to direct W.E., which tells the story of King Edward VIII, who abdicated the throne after falling in love with American divorcee Wallis Simpson.

Filming began recently and Madonna headed to France earlier this week to direct a number of shoots.

She was snapped on location holding a cigarette and a lighter, prompting reports she had taken up smoking again, a habit she quit when she was younger.

But a spokesperson for Madonna has told the Daily Mail the gossip is not true, insisting the singer was merely holding a prop cigarette for one of the stars of the movie.

Abbie Cornish, James D'Arcy and James Fox star in the biopic.

In The Media: Joe Henry about producing music with Madonna
MadonnaMadonna's brother in law Joe Henry, who co-wrote Madonna's hits Don't Tell Me and Jump has been asked by Jam! if producing an album for the Queen of Pop would be a good idea.

And he said: "Don't think we haven't talked about it. When she's ready to make that shift, it's easily done. I think it's just a matter of her getting to the point creatively where she is completely at peace with swimming in different water. I believe we'll get there. And I'll be terribly excited about it when it happens."

In The Media: Collecting Madonna
MadonnaOur forum member Cam posted the following interesting article from Paul Fraser Collectables about "collecting Madonna" on our Forum:

Investing in Madonna memorabilia today could see big returns as she proves popular at auction

Twenty four years ago today, Madonna celebrated yet another UK number one single, with the iconic "Papa Don't Preach." At the time, she was viewed as a pop star at the pinnacle of her career, offering a daring mix of youth and sexuality that had button down conservatives up in arms. While the tastes and trends of music may have changed since then, one thing has remained a constant: Madonna.

To date, Madonna has sold 250 million records worldwide and currently stands in the Guinness World Record books as the top selling female artist of all time. And despite numerous hair style changes and ill advised lycra based videos, she remains as popular as ever. Her 2008, Sticky and Sweet world tour made $408 million, the highest ever grossing tour for a solo artist and the second highest of all time. It's therefore of little surprise to find that Madonna memorabilia is becoming popular among collectors, who are starting to recognise her status and potential to match The Beatles, Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley.

According to the PFC40 autograph index, which details the 2000 - 2010 price performance of 40 of the most sought after celebrity autographs, Madonna autographs have seen an increase in value of 138.7% in the last decade, with a signed photo valued at £375 in 2000, now commanding a price of £895. As an icon of some thirty years, collectors and investors looking towards the Madonna memorabilia market will also find a variety of collectibles. With some pieces available for around £1,000 and under, there really is something to everyone's taste

Platinum record displays are one such example, a framed display of Madonna's 1986 album True Blue, recently fetched £260 ($384), while a signed platinum disc of the 2003 album American Life sold for £570 (£864) in 2005. Similarly, cheques have proven a relatively low cost opportunity to obtain Madonna's autograph, with two 1988 cheques signed Madonna Ciccone, auctioned for £640 ($960) and £750 ($1054.80) off estimated prices of $200-400.

Clothes from the star herself have also been purchased relatively cheaply with a leather jacket from rehearsals of the 1990 "Blond Ambition" tour selling for £500 ($777) at a 2005 Bonhams auction, while even a pair of Dolce and Gabbana stretch pants worn by Madonna, sold for £700 ($1,058). Nevertheless, more significant clothing memorabilia requires more significant investment. As well as being a singer, Madonna has enjoyed limited success on the silver screen. Dresses from these films have started to come on the market and offer a middle level investment opportunity for collectors and investors alike. In 2005, Bonhams auctioned, a gold, sleeveless, full length gown worn by Madonna in the film version of the famous musical Evita for £3,000 ($4,113).

Similarly, dresses made famous in music videos and tours offer collectors a unique opportunity to invest. A white wedding dress, worn by Madonna during her 1985 Virgin Tour was sold via the New York based Gotta Have It auction house for £3,750 ($5,662), against an estimate of £2,000 ($3,000). The dress had additional significance: it was worn by Britney Spears on US show Saturday Night Live in 2000, when she broke records as the youngest person to present and perform musically on the show. The value of such collectible and iconic dresses could soon increase, with some museums beginning to show an interest in Madonna memorabilia.

Earlier this year, the planned sale of the pink dress worn by Madonna in the 1985 video "Material Girl" was scrapped in favour of selling the dress to a travelling Madonna exhibition. Increasingly, personal collectibles are proving popular at both the mid level and high end of the market.

A 1979 cassette of Madonna performing an acoustic demo recorded before Madonna signed to any major record labels exceeded all expectations at a recent auction. The rare recording sold for $6,400, over three times the estimate of £1,300 ($2,000).

The most valuable Madonna collectibles have commonly touched on a specific moment from her career and much like recordings, signed documents offer truly unique collectibles at a more significant price.

A 4" x 7" black leather bound appointment book, covering the similar period from April 30th 1988 through to January 22nd 1989, came up for sale in August, 2008. The document offered a window into the star's routine, at a time when she was in the public eye, thanks to her marriage to Hollywood bad boy Sean Penn. With a low end estimate of £5,500 ($8,000) the personal document sold for $11,616 ($17,500).

Many of the most personal memorabilia, is also the most easily recognised, thanks to the worldwide focus on the star. A classic example being the stage worn Dolce and Gabbana bra from Madonna's "Live down Under" tour of Australia in 1994. The tour would be immortalised, thanks to a bestselling film of the show, which helped to broadcast the image of the stage worn bra to a worldwide audience. It was therefore of little surprise that the item sold for £8,100 ($12,500) over three times the auction estimate of £2,750 ($4,000). When we consider that, to date, Madonna has completed seven world tours, with a total gross of some $972.7 million worldwide, the collectible value of costumes and dresses related to these shows could be just as significant.

In much the same way that the careers of great sportsmen are honoured by trophies and medals, pop icons like Madonna garner success with numerous awards. These awards represent a high end investment that can be enjoyed by collectors and investors alike.

In 2008, Gotta Have it auctions sold a "World's Best Selling Pop Rock Artist of the Year" award belonging to Madonna from 2001. The statue was donated by Warner Music International as part of a charity auction and sold for £12,000 ($18,000), improving on the estimate of £11,000 ($17,000).

Given that Madonna has enjoyed a pop career of over thirty years, there remains the potential for further award memorabilia to be introduced onto the market. Yet, the most valuable Madonna memorabilia currently available to collectors focuses on her sexuality, something which transcended both her public and personal life thanks to her provocative style. In February last year Christie's put two photographs of Madonna up for sale. One photo created for a 1980s Playboy shoot, exceeded estimates, reaching $18,750 (£12,888) at auction. Yet the most popular and ultimately most sexualised collectible photographs of Madonna date back to her pre pop days in 1979. A nude picture had been expected to fetch £10,365 ($15,000) at the Christie's auction in New York, yet sold for £26,000 ($37,500). Recent years have seen more pictures emerge on the market, meaning we may not have seen the last of these particular Madonna collectibles at auction.

The market for memorabilia relating to the Queen of Pop also has huge potential to grow in the next ten to twenty years. The best comparison to be found is that of Michael Jackson. Since his death last year, the Michael Jackson memorabilia market has seen massive surges in the prices attached to collectible items. The next twenty years could see similar increases for Madonna memorabilia.

A Julien's Auctions sale at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York saw the pen scrawled lyrics to Beat It sell for £40,000 ($60,000), off a high end estimate of £2,500 ($4000). Currently, the hand written lyrics to Madonna's 1990 hit Cry Baby are currently on the market for just under £5,000 ($7,500) and could represent an investment with similar potential.

Like Madonna, Michael Jackson's career has been littered with iconic memorabilia. However, unlike Jackson, these collectibles remain greatly undervalued. A replica of the strap and zipper laden black jacket made famous by the 1987 album cover Bad and worn by Michael Jackson during his 1989 World tour recently sold for £135,000, over 20 times its auction estimate. In comparison, the famous pair of Levi 501 jeans which Madonna wore on the cover of her 1986 album True Blue, are on the market today for £18,000, alongside autographed documents related to the shoot, with both items, currently around a seventh of the price.

The most valuable memorabilia piece related to Michael Jackson remains the white rhinestone covered glove, introduced to us in 1983, alongside the famous moonwalk dance which sold for £212,000 at auction last year. Yet, similarly, the famous black basque garment, introduced to Madonna fans during the ground breaking Erotica period of her career, is currently on the market and valued at £15,000 ($20,000). With the career of Madonna continuing to enjoy steady high level success, the value of collectibles relating to an icon of celebrity culture, music and sexuality, could ensure that the value of her collectibles continue to increase. The market could soon be witnessing a further influx of Madonna memorabilia too. Madonna, herself, admits to housing a huge collection of her one off pieces, which may one day enter the market: "I have an archive museum in a warehouse which houses all the costumes I've worn on stage and in videos....one-of-a-kind pieces made for me and special pieces I've always loved."

Earlier this year a storage unit once belonging to Madonna's assistant Melissa Crow, had been repossessed. This allowed the facility owner to gain ownership of the contents for just £100 ($150). With a collection including photographs with former husband Sean Penn, actor Warren Beatty, previously unpublished photographs and other memorabilia, we probably won't be seeing the last of Madonna collectibles for some time.

Alejandro... Express Yourself
MadonnaThere's no such thing as a bad publicity, and they know it well. So - just as Madonna did over the past 25 years and counting - Lady Gaga and director Steven Klein were clearly aware of what to expect when they shoot, edited and released the singer's new video.

But while the usual Madonna vs Gaga comparison is rather tired and not worth to be posted on these pages, the Alejandro video feedback is something different. If you have seen it, you certainly know why. Just in case, here's nothing but a very few of the articles that stormed the internet since the videoclip was released yesterday.

Lady Gaga 'Alejandro' Music Video Evokes Madonna Influence, by Jennifer Waite on Yahoo!

If you haven't seen the Lady Gaga Alejandro music video yet, you may just want to take a look. If you're a Madonna fan, that is. Why? Because the entire Lady Gaga Alejandro music video seemed like an over-the-top homage to the original bad girl of Pop, with some of Lady Gaga's signature touches and futuristic spin. Gaga gives us something we've never seen before, or have we? And that's the point.

Lady Gaga's 'Alejandro' Is Not Just A Madonna Homage: The Counterpoint by James Montgomery on MTV

The conventional wisdom surrounding Lady Gaga's new "Alejandro" video - based on a few preview clips and a viewing or two - seems to be that it is probably her most Madonna clip to date, a glamorous, black-and-white mélange of Madge's finest moments (particularly the "Vogue" video, or anything else she did with director David Fincher). And while conventional wisdom isn't exactly wrong, it's definitely taking the easy way out.

Alejandr Oh No by Lauryn Brooke on the New York Press

Did you ask Madge if you could copy not one, not two or three, but four ideas from her previous music videos? My guess is you didn’t, because she would have kicked your ass all the way back to the Upper West Side just for suggesting it. Just because you collaborated with Steven Klein (who also bears some responsibility in all of this) doesn’t give you the right to rip off the woman who paved the path for you to act this way.

Lady Gaga's New Video Takes Madonna Homage a Little Too Far on HispanicBusiness.com

Can an artist be ripping off another even when she is blatantly paying homage?
That is the question that nags as one watches Lady Gaga's latest video, "Alejandro," which has all the hallmarks of a classic Madonna number: sinewy male dancer love-slaves, Catholic imagery, an ethnic theme. A la Madonna, Gaga sports a black pantsuit and even a cone bra - though Gaga's version is tipped by a pair of guns.
And then there is the loping chorus sung by a voice remarkably evocative of you-know-who's.

Books: Madonna in new book about Herb Ritts
MadonnaThis coming September 2010 a new book celebrating photographer Herb Ritts eight years after his death is being released. It's called The Golden Hour and its advertised as the definitive book on the life of the legendary Ritts, with never-before-seen images and interviews with his closest confidants.

The book includes many never-before-seen photographs and scores of interviews from business associates, curators, staff, lovers, and family, including his muse, Madonna, and other celebrities such as Cindy Crawford, Elton John, Tom Cruise, Anna Wintour, and Calvin Klein. The book includes images from Ritts’s personal archive, behind the scenes at photo shoots, parties, travels, intimate portraits, and moments with friends, along with notes and contact sheets that show how ideas became his best-known iconic images.

And for those who wonder about the Madonna treasures that will be in the book, MadonnaTribe has learnt that a never before seen image of Madonna circa 1984 - in which she's apparently wearing a pair of boxers... on her head - will be in the book.

At the time of his death in 2002, Herb Ritts was among the most celebrated photographers in celebrity portraiture, fashion, and music videos.

In The Media: Belinda jealous of Madonna's figure
MadonnaIn her new memoir, Lips Unsealed, Belinda Carlise reveals she pushed herself to lose weight after becoming envious of the Madonna's slim frame in her 1980s heyday.

Belinda was so jealous of her rival pop star's lithe figure she embarked on a series of diets which ended in a dangerous eating disorder.

In the book she says: "I thought she (Madonna) looked phenomenal because she was skinnier than me. In some way, the drink and drugs is easier because it's abstinence, but with food, you got to eat every day, and I had a terrible relationship with food. If I did eat something wrong, I would be on the treadmill for hours and hours. And if I did have a bite of that cookie, then I would beat myself up and eat as many as I could and count the calories as I went along."

Madonna's W.E. 'Obsession'
MadonnaIn more excerpts from her cover story on Interview magazine reported by Contacmusic.com. Madonna explains how she became ''obsessed'' with the script for her movie about the British royal family 'W.E.' admitting she has spent more than two years preparing the film, which tells the tale of Britain's King Edward VIII, who abdicated the throne to marry US divorcee Wallis Simpson.

She said: "I've been writing it for the last two and a half years, to tell you the truth. It's been kind of an obsession of mine. I started writing it when I finished filming 'Filth and Wisdom'.

"It's set mostly in pre-World War II England-like, 1936 to 1937-and then in New York in 1998. It goes back and forth in time. I use the Sotheby's auction in 1998 of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor's estate as a device to flash backward from."

Madonna also claims the biopic will have a large budget as it is "about a bunch of rich people".

She told Interview magazine: "I didn't realize it when we were writing the script, but once I started casting and planning and working with my production designer, I went, 'Oh, f**k. I wrote a script about a bunch of rich people. That's going to be great for the budget.'

"The Duchess has, like, 80 costume changes. She was dressed by Balenciaga and Christian Dior and Vionnet and Schiaparelli. Cartier and Van Cleef and Arpels made most of her jewellery. A lot of the actual stuff is in museum archives."

Actress Abbie Cornish recently revealed the 'Celebration' hitmaker was working hard on the movie.
She said: "She's studied every aspect of what happened with Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII.

"It's a fascinating insight into class and romance. Madonna's created a contemporary woman - who I will play - called Wally, who is fascinated by what happened to Mrs. Simpson.

Focused On Film
MadonnaMadonna has admitted she is so focused on raising her family and making a movie, she has put her music career on hold.
The '4 Minutes' hitmaker - who has children Lourdes, 13, Rocco, nine, Mercy, five, and David, four - admits she is so focused on raising her family and working on her forthcoming movie 'W.E.' that she hasn't the "time or energy" to make a record.

She said: "I haven't really been focused as much as I should be on the music part of my career, because the movie has consumed every inch of me.
"Between that and my four children, I don't have the time or energy for anything else."

The 51-year-old star admitted she has been so distracted by her other ventures, she doesn't even know how her music will be released when she finally finds the time to record again.

She added to Interview magazine: "It's weird. I don't have a record deal right now with anybody. I don't know how I'm going to get my music out the next time I make a record.

"I'm going to have to reinvent the wheel. For example, I do appreciate that lots of people worked long and hard putting together things like the DVD of the 'Sticky and Sweet' tour that we just released, and I have seen the finished product, but I have got no idea how people are going to find out about it or how it's going to be sold. I think I have a fan club - well, that's what they say."

Books: Tom Munro on Madonna
MadonnaTom Munro’s new book is chock-full of celebrity portraits: Jennifer Lopez, Dustin Hoffman, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Johnny Depp, Ashton Kutcher. But it’s Madonna that he seems most smitten with: Madge is on the cover, scattered throughout the book, and even wrote the foreword. Her poetic summation of the photographer’s art? “To have your picture taken by Tom Munro is kind of like smoking a bubblegum cigarette. You can strike a pose, look cool, get all of the sweetness, and not suffer any side effects.

Q: Getting Madonna to write your introduction is pretty major. What is it like to work with her? When did you meet, and how did you become such close collaborators?

Tom Munro: I first met Madonna on an editorial shoot for Elle. I think Madonna was keen to work with me as I had worked with her stylist Arianne Phillips before, and my ex-boss Steven Meisel put in a good word for me. Working with Madonna is really inspiring and a privilege. It’s rare to work with someone who is so driven, who brings so much to the creative process. After the shoot, Madonna asked if I would be interested in collaborating on her music video “Give It to Me.” This was my first introduction to film and I jumped at the opportunity. We did another video, “Die Another Day,” and I shot the tour book for Sticky and Sweet.

Also I had been involved with a Charity in Kenya called MEAK (Medical and Education Aid for Kenya) and knew of Madonna’s charity work in Malawi, so I asked Madonna if I could tag along on one of her visits to Africa. What she is doing there is quite extensive. It was a wonderful and moving experience to go with her, so I asked Madonna if I could list her charity as one of the beneficiaries of the book, along with MEAK.

Q: Finally, I know I could never ask a photographer to pick just one, but who are some of your favorite subjects?

Tom Munro: Johnny Depp, because he was the first celebrity I ever shot. He looked so cool when he walked in the studio I shot him just as he was. And then there’s Madonna, for so many reasons, not least of all because she’s such a wonderful and passionate person. Dustin Hoffman was undoubtedly one of the most memorable.

In The Press: Guetta on working with Madonna
MadonnaFrench DJ David Guetta was terrified of working with pop legend Madonna - because he had heard so many stories of her alleged difficult behavior.

French DJ David Guetta was terrified of working with pop legend Madonna - because he had heard so many stories of her alleged difficult behavior. The Queen of Pop convinced the beatmaker to work on her upcoming record, after his work with Kelly Rowland and Akon made him famous outside Europe. Guetta admits he was apprehensive about hitting the recording studio with the singer - but was stunned by her friendly nature.

He tells Britain's News of the World, "Madonna really is the sweetest person. "I was totally paranoid before I met her because of all the stuff that everyone says but she is really very normal. We spoke about life, love and our children. I was completely seduced."

Quotes on Madonna: Jean Paul Gaultier, bad to the bone
MadonnaIn a nice interview for The Times Online.co.uk, french designer Jean Paul Gaultier reveals some interesting tidbits about how he started his collaboration with Madonna:

It must be nice to see all those early 1990s, Madonna-style boobs back in the world. How did they originally meet? “I was a fan,” he says. “She made her first concert in Paris in 1987 or 1988, and there was a party after. I was intimidé, but she was first to arrive, waiting for everybody. She was like this always for 10 years, always on time but now... boof, finished! She is the last one,” he laughs.

“Alors, she was super-cute, so I said to ’er, ‘I would love to do something super-special for you.’ She was like, ‘Yeah, yeah, okay.’ Then, two days before my show, I receive a phone call. They tell me it’s Madonna, but I’m like, ‘Yeah, yeah, okay, whatever.’ I don’t believe it’s possible. But the next day I ask if it’s true, and there is a number and I call and she answers and tells me to come to New York and we prepare for the tour.”
So began a working relationship they’ve dipped in and out of for 20 years. A friendship also developed, though I suspect Gaultier retains a fan’s fascination. “I went to a club with her and all the good-looking boys were looking, but not recognising her. She was so famous, they couldn’t imagine she would be there, so they were cruising her".

However, his most hilarious Madonna memory relates to her wedding to Guy Ritchie in 2000. “He wore a kilt with nothing under,” says Gaultier approvingly. How do you know? “I ask him, ‘It’s true?’ He say, ‘You see!’” he says, miming Ritchie whipping up his skirt. And was it...? “Well, I understood Madonna! Hahaha!” he cackles, then shouts in delight as a plate of fish and different pastel-coloured mashed potatoes is placed in front of him.
