 | Live in Sofia: Madonna Rocks Sofia |
|
|
Madonna rocked the Bulgarian capital Saturday night from 10 pm until 12 am in her first ever concert in the country.
Some 60,000 fans filled the Vasil Levski Stadium in downtown Sofia in what is the largest musical event of its kind to ever take place on Bulgarian soil.
The concert started shortly after 8 pm and the crowd was warmed up with various disco beats and mixes for about an hour.
Instead at 9 pm as advertised earlier, Madonna appeared on stage at about 9:55 pm. In the one hour before that the eager fans entertained themselves with more than 150 audience (Mexican) waves.
In addition to her to top hits, Madonna's concert also included messages for religious tolerance and civic activism - something to which the Sofia audience responded with great cheers and enthusiasm.
A total of 450 security personnel - the largest such number ever employed in Bulgaria for a single event - were in charge of keeping Madonna's concert in Sofia in order; police were largely not visible until the very end of the show when they helped regulated the exits and the routes to the closest public transport and subway stations. No accidents have been reported during the concert.
It is still unclear whether Madonna will spend the night in Bulgaria, or would fly away after the concert.

 | Live in Sofia: Latest from Bulgaria |
|
|
Contrary to rumours that spread around this week, no additional filming took place at the concert in Sofia tonight.
M-Triber NeilC who was on the barrier at the Vasil Levski Stadium tonight confirmed that there was no extra filming taking place tonight other than the usual Guy Oseary filming during "Give Iit 2 Me".
The Michael Jackson tribute during "Holiday" also took place as usual with no substantial change from the show we already know.
On the other hand the venue looked really packed and it's easy to say that bringing Madonna to Bulgaria was a success.

 | Live in Sofia: Latest from the Vasil Levski National Stadium |

Gates opened at the Vasil Levski National Stadium in Sofia, Bulgaria, a fter Madonna had finished rehearsing, and the first fans are already in the Golden Circle for tonight's concert.
Fans queueing outside the stadium heard Madonna rehearse Candy Shop, Holiday, and Give it 2 Me. Organization for the Golden Circle seems to be very well done and there were no problems with getting pocket cameras in.
The time zone in Sofia is set to the Eastern European Summer Time, which means that watches are set two hours ahead than London, UK.
Madonna arrived in Sofia in the early afternoon and was driven straight to the venue, and she is also expected to leave Bulgaria right after the concert ends, although eight hotels have reportedly said they are ready to accommodate her, should she decide to stay for the night.

 | Live in Sofia: Church outrage over Madonna gig (yes, again) |
|
|
Madonna fans are being urged to stay away from her forthcoming Sticky and Sweet tour date in Bulgaria by the country's Orthodox Church, the BBC News report.
Church of Bulgaria officials have accused the star of showing a "lack of respect" for church rituals.
They expressed their "disapproval and disagreement" with her planned show this Saturday in the Bulgarian capital.
The concert, at Sofia's Vasil Levski Stadium, is expected to be attended by about 50,000 people.
Saturday is also a day of lent for Orthodox Christians marking the beheading of John the Baptist.
A statement from the Church accused Madonna of displaying "a disrespectful and intolerant attitude" to the religious feelings of Christians on her ongoing tour.
"We express our Christian support and approval for the art of singing, which influences the moral development of people and promotes universal moral values," it said.
"In some of her choreography and stage scenarios, this singer sends impressive messages which, however, run contrary to Christian morality."
Madonna will arrive in Sofia following a concert in neighbouring Romania, on Wednesday.
Almost all tickets - costing up to 150 leva (£67) - have already been sold, organisers said. It will be one of the largest gigs ever organised in Sofia.
