Live in Warsaw: Poles protest holy day concert by Madonna
A Polish ultra-religious movement Tuesday said it planned prayer sessions to protest a concert by US superstar Madonna in Warsaw on August 15, which is when Roman Catholics honour the Virgin Mary.
"We're going to continue our crusade with daily prayer sessions outside Warsaw city hall from August ," said Marian Brudzynski, head of the Committee for the Defence of the Faith and Tradition.
"We'll start with a group of a few hundred people, but I'm convinced that the square in front of city hall will end up filled with pious Poles," he said.
Brudzynski, an independent local councillor who previously represented the far-right and ardently Catholic League of Polish Families, has been pushing Warsaw city hall to ban Madonna's first-ever show in Poland.
Concert organisers said the 70,000-ticket event was already all but sold out.
Madonna has often angered faithful Christians in the past not only with her racy shows but also with on-stage antics such as a mock crucifixion scene.
Even though her real first name is Madonna, that also offends some Christians because it is an alternative term for the mother of Jesus, the Virgin Mary.
The Virgin Mary holds a special place for Roman Catholics, who every August 15 mark the Assumption, celebrating her being taken bodily to heaven after her death.
The Virgin Mary is particularly important in Poland, where more than 90 percent of the population of 38 million people are professed Roman Catholics.
Her shrines have long been a symbol of the country's survival in the face of centuries of foreign invasion, and she was even declared queen of Poland 350 years ago.
Madonna recorded a short nice message for Polish radio Rmf Fm inviting her fans to join her for her concert in Warsaw on August 15.
In the short clip set to the music of "Give It 2 Me" you can listen to her saying:
"Hi, this is Madonna, and I'm looking forward to seeing you on August 15 - the day before my birthday! - at Bemowo Airport. And you're listening to Rmf Fm."

Live in Warsaw: Madonna concert outrages religious
Several Catholic organizations throughout Poland are calling for cancellation of the Madonna concert on 15 August in Poland due to the fact that it is the religious feast day of the Assumption of Mary.
"Madonna cannot sing on the day of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary," claims member of the Mazowiecki regional assembly, Marian Brudzinski. "We are calling for a moral stand in Warsaw. A protest committee is being formed to organize parishes," added the regional representative.
"It harms our religious sentiment. Besides that, Madonna’s performances are anti-Christian," states Krzysztof Zagozda from the Unum Principum Catholic Society, who initiated the protest. Zagozda added that the fact that the concert is organized on the Catholic feast day is a distinct attempt to stir controversy.
Former Warsaw Solidarity chaplain, Father Stanislaw Malkowski, shares Zagozda’s opinion: "It must be revealed who is responsible for this. The Church and nation should protest loudly."
"We will do everything so as not to allow this scandal to take place," added Brudzynski, a former member of League of Polish Families. The protest committee is scheduled to meet next week and will gather signatures throughout parishes and send formal declaration of protest to the concert’s organizers as well as the main sponsor, Allegro.pl, an internet auction portal.
The committee is appealing to the Minister of Interior and Administration, Grzegorz Schetyna, and concert organizers to cancel the event.
"If that does not work out, there will be a massive picket at the concert. We want to stifle Madonna," warns Brudzynski.
