Madonna on Divas compilation
Madonna‘s “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” is available on the Andrew Lloyd Webber homage compilation “Divas“. Originally released in 2006 and now re-released from Universal Music, Divas contains 18 songs from Webber’s musicals sung by Madonna, Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, Glenn Close, Tina Arena and many more.
Three are the songs taken from the musical “Evita” on this compilation. The opening track “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” by Madonna, “Rainbow High” by Julie Convington and “Another Suitcase In Another Hall” by Barbara Dickinson.
A short mention of how Madonna made the movie instead of Maryl Streep can be found in the following liner notes for the album. “Sing La Streep could, as she later proved on screen but by the time production arrangements were made for the film to be made, two decades after the musical had been written, everyone who had originally been considered for the part was long past 33, Eva Peron‘s age at the time of her death. An Evita for a new generation had to be cast, and Madonna was the obvious choice. Her Gloden Globe-winning form is apparent on this album in ‘Don’t Cry For Me Argentina‘ which completed the song’s twenty year trek from the British to the American Top Ten.”
