”Sorry” review on Launch UK
Just when you think it’s all over for Madonna, that she’s finally lost her vice-like grip on popular culture, she delivers a spectacular comeback. The Abba-sampling “Hung Up” was a triumph – not just because it forced a long overdue critical rehabilitation of Benny, Bjorn and co, but because it sounded like it had been forged from steel with a momentum to match. If you tried to stand in front of “Hung Up”, you’d be flattened, crushed by an unstoppable talent with a point to prove.
“Sorry” is a solid consolidation single. Phase two in the campaign. It won’t make you double take in the way that “Hung Up” did, but you won’t feel at a loss either. It begins, brilliantly, with Madge intoning “I’m sorry” in various languages, clearly not meaning it in anyway, while what sounds like the Pet Shop Boys warm-up in the background. Then it’s Kylie all the way. Meticulously crafted Saturday Night pop. It may not trouble your heart unduly, but you can’t deny its impact.
Phase three: Madonna invades…erm, where’s left?
