Sorry (doesn’t) seem to be the hardest word
The UK press can’t resist to give spotlight to the apology that Sir Elton John‘s gave Madonna in his recent Entertainment Weekly interview. Here are articles from today’s edition of The Daily Record and The Daily Star.
“Elton John has admitted he will apologise to Madonna for his outrageous comments about lip-synching, but blames the outburst on booze.
The Rocket Man caused outrage when he trashed the Material Girl and accused her of miming during the televised Q Awards in London.
But now Elton has revealed his rant, which came just days after his tantrum at a Taiwan airport, happened after a liquid lunch. In a revealing interview with Entertainment Weekly magazine, Elton admitted: ‘We were at a very drunken lunch. The Best Live Act award came up and it was bands like The Darkness and Muse and then Madonna.
‘It didn’t seem to make sense. These guys are driving around in a van, trying to get their career together, singing their hearts out. If it had been Best Show of the Year, I wouldn’t have had a problem, but I feel strongly about lip-synching and how people do get conned.’
But even during his attempt at publicly apologising, Elton still managed to hit out at another star while denying he was cranky. Asked him what he thought about pal Rupert Everett, Elton said: ‘Rupert obviously needs publicity. He said I should stop being so cranky. Well I’m not cranky, I just happened to say the Madonna crack.
‘I don’t want to escalate it because I like Madonna. She’s been to my house for dinner. It was something that was said in the heat of the moment and probably should not have been. Would I apologise to her if I saw her? Yeah, because I don’t want to hurt any artist’s feelings.
‘It was my fault. I instigated the whole thing, but it applies to all those bloody teenage singers. The reaction to the comment was so hysterical. It was like I said all gays should be killed or Hitler was right. I just said someone was lip-synching. I am not afraid to speak my mind. I’m not going to mellow with age. I get more enraged as I get older because you see that these injustices go on.’
Elton also tried to explain his outburst at Taipei Airport, branding the snappers ‘rude vile pigs’.
He said: ‘That was unfortunate. We arrived at 12.15 at night, we were going through the terminal and were just ambushed.
‘The photographers were pretty hostile. In the end you just get tired and it’s like, if they’re going to say: ‘F*** off out of Taiwan’ you’re going to answer them back. It’s happened to Robbie Williams and others too, it seems to be normal in Taiwan.’
